A thriller is a genre that is mainly seen in a crime or espionage. This is because it is an exciting plot that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat waiting for a big reveal. Thriller can also been seen in a horror because it takes the essence of tension, suspense and scares but can be related from the real world. Thriller also uses a lot of twists and illusions trying to trick the audience into believing one thing but actually, the other happens.
There are a few different codes and conventions used in a thriller film for example some technical codes are:
- Camera shots (angles and movement)
- Lighting
- Editing (cuts and fades)
- Mis-En-Scene (Props in a scene)
- Sounds
- Colour
These are all examples of technical codes used in thriller films

Themes & Settings
Themes are very important when talking about thriller films. This is because a theme is how the genre is represented throughout the film and there are few different types as shown below:
- Crime
- Urban
- Modern
- Betrayal
- Greed
- Paranoia
The main type of thriller theme is to add mind games and twists to try and add an effect to engage the audience into the film more. An example of a thriller theme is mainly based on the normal Protagonist VS Antagonist in the film which can be seen in a new thriller film called "The Purge: Election Year".

This is how the viewers of the film see it and how their view so for example if i wanted to see out of the eyes of the antagonist then you can make it a first person shot, this is by how they have structured the thriller film. Bellow are some examples of structure a narrative themes:

In conclusion we have found out that a thriller film can include all different types of genre including horror as long as it has a good plot with a lot of mind games with an Antagonist VS a Protagonist.
